Sleep-assist

  • Continuous rain by night — Exeter city centre

    24 November 2018

A great sleep-assist soundscape! Extract from an all-night recording of continuous rain on the night of 23–24 November 2018 from my bedroom window, varying from moderate to heavy, though sounding gentler because this is from second-floor height, and most of the direct rainfall impacts are a way down below and so sound quite gentle. In addition we hear nearer at hand various drippings and the trickling sounds of run-off from roofs in various drainpipes, including one close at hand. A very comforting watery sound! — 66'

  • Drogo Weir, Teign Gorge, with full flow

    11 December 2018

An invigorating and also great sleep-assist soundscape, recorded in the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK. Drogo Weir has an incorporated fish ladder in the middle, which considerably increases the thundering quality of its sound when there's at least a reasonably full flow. On this day the flow was enough to overwhelm the fish ladder. I recorded this a bit closer than previous recordings (which also had less flow), so the basic recording is a bit hard on the ears for extended listening at realistic volume.

For this reason I produced a 'laid-back' version of it, with a slight tilt away from the treble. This sounds very much as though heard from a little further back, and is kinder on the ears, and it's that version that I'm presenting here. — 78'
