Distant dawn chorus in Teign Gorge, from near Hunter's Gate
23 June 2016Pure peace! An expansive soundscape of mostly distant birdsong, after the lead-in period, during which latter the odd distant nightjar can be heard, and sometimes a tawny owl right down in the bottom of the valley. Split into two parts. — 68' each
-
River Teign and distant dawn chorus from Sharp Tor, Teign Gorge
23 June 2016Pure peace and a great sleep-assist soundscape! — But in addition a widely spacious and distant birds' dawn chorus unfolds, starting with a very quiet prelude from the odd nightjars. Split into two parts. — 72' each
-
River Teign at night from Sharp Tor, Teign Gorge
23 June 2016Pure peace and a great sleep-assist soundscape! This captures not only the direct sound of the river, but all its echoes off the woods on the surrounding valley slopes. That is, if you're sufficiently sensitive in your listening, you can hear the lower slopes of the valley too — a bewitching effect when one tunes in sufficiently! — 77'

Blackbird paradise, with singing fence, just upstream from Teign Gorge
2 May 2017Extended afternoon birds' chorus, with many blackbirds and at times mostly distant mistle thrushes, with the gentle background sound of the River Teign close by. This recording picked up some rather beautiful and intriguing brief 'singing' sounds from the wire fence (the aeolian harp principle), transmitted through the fence post it was perched upon. — 90'

Early spring afternoon birdsong by River Teign near Teign Gorge
13 March 2018What we could call a 'pre-celebration' of spring birdsong from surrounding woods and copses close to the River Teign just upstream from the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, with thinly spread mostly distant birdsong, including the odd more or less distant mistle thrush episodes. — A gentle joy to hear as we come out of winter and its deprivations! — 78'
-
Morning birdsong by River Teign near Teign Gorge
11 April 2018A celebration of spring birdsong from surrounding woods and copses close to the River Teign just upstream from the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, with lots of foreground blackcap and periodic more distant mistle thrush (sounds more like an anxious blackbird than a song thrush!). — 84'
-
Peaceful late spring afternoon in clearing in Bellever Forest, Dartmoor
8 June 2018A very quiet and peaceful panorama, with distant birds, including very persistent cuckoo, and foreground bumblebees, hoverflies and some other flies. — 89'

Fun time: Acorn hail! — Falling acorns in Teign Gorge woods
10 October 2018A real fun piece, as well as a simply delightful listen! On the steep wooded slope of Hunter's Tor, Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, gusts of breeze catch the treetops and 'liberate' acorns just awaiting a turn for pelting what- or who-ever is below! Listen to this with headphones, with the volume turned up about 9dB above a sensible normal level, for the most realistic effect, and see if you yourself get pelted! — 78'

Wind gusts in Sitka Spruce trees on Dartmoor, with a few birds
31 March 2019Wind gusts in scattered young self-seeded Sitka spruce trees and, more distant, a stand of more mature plantation of the same species, with sparse more or less distant bird sounds. A peaceful early spring soundscape on flank of Bellever Tor on Dartmoor, with an invigorating austere and noble quality of that wind sound — quite different from the sound of wind in broadleaved trees. — 33'
-
Springtime evening birdsong sequence by Bellever Tor, Dartmoor
20 April 2019Spring birdsong low down on flank of Bellever Tor, among scattered Sitka spruce trees, with forestry plantation nearby (Bellever Forest). — 40'

Birds' dawn chorus north-west of Bellever Tor, Dartmoor
1 June 2019Full dawn chorus (pre-dawn to early morning) in edge of regrowing forestry in clear-felled area, among scattered Sitka spruce trees (Bellever Forest). Cuckoos periodically echoing / reverberating in the dense stands of the spruces not far off, and we're treated to a half-hour quiet nightjar chorus plus a lone melancholy-sounding distant cuckoo leading us in ever so gradually… — 155'
-

Hum of flies in open woods high in Teign Gorge on a hot and sultry afternoon
12 August 2020
A beautiful and energizing sound! On the wooded slope a little above the Lower Deer Stalker's Path, high on the south side of the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, above Fingle Bridge, we listen in to the woodland (or should I say, wonderland?) background sound that almost all people ignore — the vast multitude of flies. The hum is mostly from hoverflies (Diptera, Syrphidae), but other flies and also bees, bumblebees and wasps of a huge range of species are all in the mix.

Ambience in stand of tall Sitka spruce trees in Fernworthy Forest, Dartmoor (1)
23 March 2022On a sunny early spring day with rather chilly moderate breeze generally, but with shelter in this stand of tall Sitka spruce, this is a beautifully refreshing soundscape, with sparse and generally rather to very distant birdsong, and a constant quiet background of the wind in the treetops. It makes me think of pure spring water. This recording is a rather zoomed-in one, which brings the birdsong a bit nearer than how I was actually hearing it there. — 16'

Ambience in stand of tall Sitka spruce trees in Fernworthy Forest, Dartmoor (2)
23 March 2022
From the same spot as the previous recording, but not zoomed-in, and so sounding quieter, more remote and spacious, so this is more like how I was actually hearing it there. — 36'

Hum of flies in the woods — Teign Gorge on sultry June day
24 June 2023A beautiful and energizing sound, when you properly tune into it! — The hum of countless flies in the steep valley-slope woods of the so-called Teign Gorge (which isn't a gorge!) on a very warm and humid late June day. Various seasonal bird songs and calls are also heard, though nearly all more or less distant. A quite soporific soundscape, and thus a great sleep-assist one. — 61'
-
Gentle wind gusts and family of ravens in the woods — Teign Gorge
24 June 2023Starting off with the hum of flies in the wood, the emphasis soon changes as the very gentle breeze picks up a bit, sending refreshing gentle gusts through the trees, and a family of ravens arrives and lingers. The calls of the young ravens are quite different from, though clearly related to, those of the parents. — A delightfully peaceful soundscape on a sultry late June middle of day. — 45'

Hum of flies in the woods, with chiffchaffs — zoomed-in for fun!
28 June 2023A beautiful and energizing sound, when you properly tune into it! — A zoomed-in recording of the hum of countless flies in the steep valley-slope woods of the so-called Teign Gorge (which isn't a gorge!) on a warm and humid late June day. Various seasonal bird songs and calls are also heard — mostly chiffchaff. Although they are nearly all more or less distant, the zooming-in has brought them into a pleasing prominence. One brief episode brings a smile to my face every time I hear it — an angry-sounding tiff between two carrion crows as they briefly fly about. Apart from that amusing incident, this can be a quite soporific soundscape, and thus a great sleep-assist one. — 57'

Roe deer rutting calls in Teign Gorge, above Fingle Bridge
22 October 2023The roe deer stags are rutting, uttering their strange and sonorous challenges. The loud ones we hear, straight in front of us, are not this side of the valley at all, but quite some way away, on lower slope of the hill on the other side of the valley. Others we hear more distantly are mostly on this (south) side of the valley, but further east (downstream, on our right). — 45'
-
Roe deer rutting calls in Teign Gorge — reduced background sound
22 October 2023
The same recording, but with a 12db reduction of the background sound of the River Teign, enabling many more distant details to be clearly discerned. I set the level of this a bit too high; needs playing volume lowered by 2 or 3 dB. — 42'

Nature-Symphony 14 (Celebration of rutting stags)
22 October 2023Transformed 5-layer version of the parent recording. Not a wind chime in earshot this time, but roe deer stags bellowing out their almost burp-like rutting calls — the soundscape also adorned and punctuated by the calls of various birds flitting around, including linnet, blue tit, long-tailed tit, robin, skylark, carrion crow, nuthatch, jay (a comical spat between two or more of them). — 48'
