  • July long night thunderstorm with frequent lightning (reduced big peaks)

    night of 18–19 July 2017

Complete thunderstorm from first audible murmurs to final dying grumbles, with a really long and seemingly 'poetic' approach period, with lightning dancing around in the forward extended anvil-top of the cloud, even overhead at an early stage, while the thunder's still quiet and creepy because it's still several miles away vertically at that stage. — 115'

Heed the caution about the (albeit reduced) dynamic range!

  • July long night thunderstorm with frequent lightning (full dynamic range)

    night of 18–19 July 2017

Same recording as above, but the 2 close strikes are untamed, so, all the more so, heed the caution about the big dynamic range!

  • Receding lunchtime thunderstorm with frequent lightning

    26 May 2018

We come in with the final really loud peal of thunder, and then the storm peps up as it moves away, but what we hear of the then very frequent lightning is all quiet because it's all up in the anvil-top of the cloud. — 15'

  • Torrential shower high up in Teign Gorge

    12 July 2018

A prolonged shower, torrential for a while, recorded beside the Hunter's Path, high up on the north side of the Teign Gorge (Drewsteignton, Devon, UK). The rain sound is augmented by the assault of drips from the tree canopy onto my umbrella. The recording begins with gusts of gentle breeze in the trees, with the first faint patterings of rain noticeable from about 12½' in.

As this gets building up, the sound of raindrops falling on the umbrella becomes dwarfed by the louder impacts of the drips coming down from the tree foliage, and in the torrential phase this becomes an entertaining din. As this gradually dies down, amid all the drippings from the trees we hear the occasional distant tawny owl, but the reality is that this is only about mid-afternoon — not in the night. — 78'

  • Wind through trees high up in Teign Gorge, on south side

    9 March 2019

A beautifully spacious and detailed panorama of wind gusts chasing around through the trees high up on the wooded southern slope of the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, with some birds as it's early spring. Ones I noticed were robin (most prominent and frequent), blue tit, coal tit, wren, a couple of brief raven fly-overs, and for a short while a very distant mistle thrush. — 222' total, split into two equal parts.

  • December wind through trees high up in Teign Gorge

    9 December 2019

Made concurrently with 191209_r5-01+02, this was made just a little down the steep slope below the Hunter's Path, just east of Hunting Gate, high up above the Teign Gorge. This has a much more varied and spacious panorama, overlooking the deep valley, with wind gusts coming from over the hilltop (to right) and chasing around as they rush over or down into the valley. There are three brief very light showers during this recording, but especially the last can be difficult to notice because of all the dead leaves rattling and rustling in the wind. — 99'

  • December wind through line of beech trees above Teign Gorge

    9 December 2019

Part-way along the line of tall, expansive beech trees that runs northward over the top of the hill from Hunting Gate on the Hunter's Path, high up above the Teign Gorge. An imposing, majestic sort of sound. — 97'

  • Strong wind in the trees high up in Teign Gorge (1)

    1 February 2020

Strong wind gusts rushing over the top of the hill and roaring through the trees as they come racing, chasing, down and around, over or into the deep steep-sided valley known as the Teign Gorge (Drewsteignton, Devon, UK). This isn't quite gale force, but the gusts are still pretty strong.

Facing downwind, across the valley. — 88'

  • Strong wind in the trees high up in Teign Gorge (2)

    1 February 2020

Strong wind gusts rushing over the top of the hill and roaring through the trees as they come racing, chasing, down and around, over or into the deep steep-sided valley known as the Teign Gorge (Drewsteignton, Devon, UK). This isn't quite gale force, but the gusts are still pretty strong.

Facing across the wind, so gusts come over hilltop to right, rushing over into or over the valley (to left / behind). — 137'

  • Night rain, torrential at times, with city seagulls and blackbirds

Small hours of 11 June 2020

Rain during small hours, torrential at times, with city seagulls at times, and, during the final half-hour, the odd blackbirds starting up as dawn approaches. — 88'

  • June afternoon thundery shower

    11 June 2020

An afternoon thundery shower, with longish anticipatory lead-in with increasing gusts of wind in the trees before rain and thunder come in. The thunder is all more or less distant as the body of the system is just passing close-by, except for one impressive quite close strike. — 22'

  • Light shower in woods high in Teign Gorge

    16 August 2020

A quite brief light shower beside the Lower Deer Stalker's Path, high on the south side of the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, above Fingle Bridge.

  • Showers, dripping, and wind in woods high in Teign Gorge

    3 October 2021

A lengthy sequence of showery rain with mild squalls, recorded from the slope a little above Lower Deer Stalker's Path, high on the south side of the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, above Fingle Bridge.

  • Wind in trees — gale blowing — in open woods high in Teign Gorge (1)

    21 February 2022

On the southern flank of Storm Franklin on 21 February 2022. A strong wind with gale-force gusts racing and chasing through the trees high up on the north side of the so-called Teign Gorge.

First of 3 consecutive recordings in this immediate area during this 3+ hours session. For this recording, the recorder is in a relatively sheltered bit of the woodland, and the gusts coming close around are not all that strong or loud, but that means that we're hearing all the more clearly the general commotion all around, including from the other side of the valley (to left). There's something really beautiful and invigorating about being in a relatively calm patch while crazy strong gusts are chasing about all around us. —15'

  • Wind in trees — gale blowing — in open woods high in Teign Gorge (2)

    21 February 2022

On the southern flank of Storm Franklin on 21 February 2022. A strong wind with gale-force gusts racing and chasing through the trees. Second of 3 consecutive recordings in this immediate area during this 3+ hours session. For this recording, the recorder is just a little further up the track, in a less sheltered bit of the woodland. Periodically stronger gusts come roaring around, and the whole soundscape here is more frisky and volatile than in the first recording. To shelter the recorder sufficiently, I placed it in the lee of a holly bush.

  • August afternoon thundery shower merging with thunderstorm

    15 August 2022

A thundery shower develops as it comes up and then merges with a major line of storm that's keeping distant enough for its frequent thunder to remain pretty quiet for us… — 35'

  • October night thunderstorm & heavy showers

    night of 18–19 October 2022

A series of heavy-to-torrential showers, becoming thundery, with a central actual thunderstorm, whose thunder is a bit 'polite' but its rain is super-torrential (real pandemonium!). — 75'

  • Aggressive night thunderstorm, with warning!

    night of 22–23 October 2022

A relatively brief and fast-moving thunderstorm, from first murmurs to last dying grumbles. This one is distinguished by its delivering mostly earth-strikes and so sounding more intimidating than previous thunderstorms I'd recorded. It includes two close earth strikes, which sound hilariously apocalyptic / terrifying if played at the correct level — please heed the warning and tips given on the Freesound page… —42'

  • Thunderstorm with some ground strikes coming over — BIG dynamic range!

    9 May 2023

A gradual approach of this May thunderstorm in Exeter, UK city centre, culminating in an apocalyptic-sounding ground strike, and then… nothing much! The rainfall that came over sounded only moderately heavy, though with a scattering of hailstones for a short while. — 29'
